Dr Serenhedd James

Honorary Research Fellow and Tutor in Ecclesiastical History

Serenhedd James has taught ecclesiastical history at St Stephen’s House since 2012; he first joined the community as a student in 2005. His main research interests lie in the development of nineteenth-century British socio-religious identities; within those parameters he has particular expertise in the Roman Catholic Church, the Oxford Movement, and the Anglican religious communities. His present focus is on religious philanthropy in the British Empire, through the lens of the Cowley Fathers in South Africa. He is a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and the Royal Historical Society; away from Staggers he is a senior member of St Chad’s College, Durham. He is also deputy editor of the Catholic Herald, having previously worked for the Church Times. An experienced liturgical musician, he has served intermittently as college organist. He lives at the bottom of the garden.
